Dresden is the capital city of Saxony and cultural and political center of the federal state. Beneath TU Dresden there are numerous other universities and universities of applied science focussing on the topics technology, economy as well as culture and arts. In addition Dresden houses the biggest center of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft with eleven institutions and several institutions of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Helmholtz Association and Leibnitz Association.
Apart from its significance in education and research the “Elbflorenz” is well known for its beautiful old town, copious galeries and museums, multi-faceted nightlife and the annual christmas market “Striezelmarkt”.
The TU Dresden is the biggest university in Dresden and holds over 36.000 students and nearly 8.000 employees. Its roots go back to the “Technische Bildungsanstalt Dresden” until 1828. Today the TU Dresden persuades by its wide spectrum of study courses. Since 2006 the university is promoted by the “Exzellenz-Initiative” and also one of the nine leading universities united to “TU9”.
Under the motto “Knowledge builds bridges – education unites people” the TU Dresden nowadays holds five schools with 14 faculties and 124 courses of study. One special feature is that in many courses of study no switch to bachelor and master was carried out – there still the diplom graduation is offered. Caused by the diverse buildings of different epochs the campus gets its unmistakable and unique flair.
